We here at GuildMag will bring you coverage during the event here and via our twitter, so be sure to check us out on both mediums!
As a note, the Guild Wars 2 client download will be e-mailed to all participants somewhere early next week!
We’re counting the days until the first public Guild Wars 2 Beta Weekend Event, which begins on Friday, April 27, at noon PDT (GMT-7) and ends on Sunday, April 29, at 11:59 p.m. PDT (GMT-7). Hundreds of thousands of players from around the world will get their first taste of Guild Wars 2—and rest assured, we’ll be playing alongside them!
There are a couple important things you need to know about this Beta Weekend Event:
- The only way to absolutely guarantee your access to this or any future Beta Weekend Events is to pre-purchase any edition of Guild Wars 2.
- Customers who have pre-purchased the game will receive an e-mail next week with instructions on how to download the client and participate in the Beta.
- This is a public event, which means that you’re not bound by a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA). So go ahead, feel free to take screenshots, shoot video, blog, tweet, write, or compose a rock opera to share your Guild Wars 2 experience with the world.
Let’s take a look at all the cool stuff you’ll be doing during the Beta Weekend Event.
Choices, Choices – You’ll create your own personalized charr, human, or norn character and pick from our eight powerful professions. Your choice of race is vital to your personal story, and it determines in which of the huge starting areas you begin as well. A noble human mesmer will have a radically different game experience than a charr engineer in the service of the Iron Legion. Fortunately, you can roll more than one character and sample each starting area for yourself!
Worlds Collide – If you want your PvP on an epic scale, look no further than World vs. World, where three teams comprising hundreds of players wage open war across four vast maps. You’ll lay siege to castles, raid supply camps, build devastating weaponry, ambush your foes, and leap into truly massive PvP battles—all for the glory of the server. We’re warning you: WvW is so addictive that you may spend the entire Beta Weekend Event there!
PvP For You and Me – After you’ve gotten your feet wet, put your newfound skills to the test in Guild Wars 2 PvP, where small teams battle for points on a variety of challenging, compact maps. We adjust the level of PvP combatants so that all players are on equal footing. If you’ve got a competitive streak or you like playing first-person shooters online, you owe it to yourself to try out Guild Wars 2 PvP!
I Love L.A. – For the first time ever, we’re opening the metropolis of Lion’s Arch to beta players. Wander the streets of this cosmopolitan trade hub, chat with traders and travelers from every corner of Tyria, hop through one of the many asura gates to points beyond, or discover the famed diving platform at Diverse Ledges. Lion’s Arch is a city like no other!

Over at Guild Wars 2 Guru, user Paulhaley2000 shared a summary of a new article inside the latest GameInformer. It details new information on the sylvari Personal Story and the Starter Zone. Below you can find an excerpt of some interesting points, for the whole summary head over to the topic at GW2G.
- The journey begins within the mystical dream prior to being called into Tyria. The dream is being threatened by an incursion. “something intrudes upon the Dream,”, the introductory narration warns.
- After extinguishing a handful of nightmares, mostly represented by twisted wolves, I unlock the tutorial-ending event. Each race’s tutorial features a unique ending event showcasing some of the massive creatures that you can expect to take on throughout guild wars 2. In this case it is a giant four-legged beast made of trees and rocks. This monster is called shadow of the dragon.

If you are a part of the Guild Wars 1 community (and even if you are not) you have probably heard about GWEN. No, not the Mesmer in Eye of the North. I’m talking about the Gaming World Entertainment Network!
GWEN is an online radio station that is also affiliated with Gamers Giving Back. Both organizations are run by the same person, M A L I B U Barbie, or Rhonda as she is known here on Earth. She has been running these organizations since January 2010. Her mission is to prove the stereotype of gamers wrong. We aren’t just sitting at home staring at a screen, we have big hearts and we are active in giving back to the world.
The Toga Party is one of the many events Rhonda has organized through GWEN and Gamers Giving Back. Another one of their major events is Pink Day in LA (Lion’s Arch) which happens every October to bring awareness and raise money for Breast Cancer. I attended my very first Pink Day this last October and I had a ton of fun! The events are fun, friendly, and you have a chance to win great prizes. More on that later.

Humble Ferocity
In our most recent article and over the past few months, we’ve explored the fiercer side of the aquatic civilizations, from krait to naga, and finally to the elusive Elder Dragon of the sea. However, there is a more benevolent and peaceful side to this otherwise harsh environment. A side which is to be found amongst the soft-spoken and mild-mannered quaggan.
Unlike the other races of the sea, the quaggan are not highly combative, instead restraining their aggression as much as possible. Even in conversation, they have a tendency to avoid confrontation. Both actions are a result of a part of their basic nature that they prefer to keep under check: a transformation from the normally relaxed and serene attitude of the quaggan, to an aggravated and aggressive attitude in which they lose control of themselves. This prevents them from distinguishing between individuals, making them a danger to, well, everyone, including their own person.
As such, quaggan society has developed to avoid these manifestations of aggression as much as possible, for their own survival as well as the safety of others.

If you somehow didn’t hear the news, you’ve been able to pre-purchase Guild Wars 2 since Tuesday. Some people probably need to buy new keyboards because they’ve worn out their F5 key through refreshing over and over and over again until the site went live. If you haven’t signed up yet, you can still do so: in fact, you’ll probably have an easier time of it as the servers won’t be on the verge of melting under the opening day crush.
For everyone who has pre-purchased, the next date circled on your gaming calendar will be the upcoming beta weekend event (if you’ve pre-purchased your license, you also get to take part in all beta events* from now until release). We know it will be at the end of April, but ArenaNet has not told us what will be in the beta we’ll be testing.
That brings up a point that someone mentioned in guild chat the other night … she wasn’t going to pre-purchase GW2 because she’d heard that the beta client was “buggy”. I hope that she was just kidding, but I did point out that anything with a “beta” designation will have bugs, sometimes lots of bugs. Beta weekend is our opportunity to try playing a not-yet-ready-for-release game. Expect bugs. In fact, expect and report bugs!
The more bugs you report, the sooner ArenaNet’s developers can fix ‘em, and the sooner we’ll get to a released game. The beta event is a trade: ArenaNet gives you the opportunity to play the game, but in return expects you to fill in the convenient bug report forms and to give them your appraisals of dynamic events, boss fights, and anything else you think they could improve. Having fun is only a side-benefit. If we all do a good job as beta testers, ArenaNet will provide us with a better game at release.
* Note that on Thursday, some players were contacted to take part in a stress test this weekend. This is not considered part of the beta program and therefore is under a non-disclosure agreement. If you’re taking part, don’t risk your access to the beta (and possibly even the released game) by blabbing about it.
