The big event this week was the EU Fanday that ArenaNet held for European fan sites in their Brighton, England offices. Dutch Sunshine was the GuildMag participant in the event, and you’ll see his recounting of the event in several articles we’ve posted this week. On Thursday, we had the traditional progression we are all familiar with: ArenaNet issues a bit of news, lots of folks seem to misunderstand the news and flood social media with their concerns, community managers have to spend lots of time soothing the ruffled feathers. It’s the fan equivalent of Kabuki Theatre: highly stylized, elaborate, and heavily made-up.
Note: Because this is being published so long after all the April 1st pranks, I’ve added a “†” character in front of each April 1st post (you can treat them as spoilers or warning signs, your choice).
Update: I’ve had a reguest to make the April 1st posts stand out even more, as someone didn’t notice the “†” character and got rather upset. I’ve changed that eyecatcher to “April 1st” instead. My apologies if you were similarly upset by some of the April Fools content not being sufficiently different from the real content.

Official Guild Wars 2 news
- April 1st Official Guild Wars 2 Wiki — March 2012: State of the Game. “On March 16th the Guild Wars 2 Wiki managed to schedule an exclusive interview with ArenaNet, on the condition that all organisation was taken care of by the wiki community itself. After a series of discussions spanning two article talk pages, three user talk pages, and an image talk page, a number of users were sent forth with the prepared questions. ArenaNet’s Colin Johanson provided the answers, including some shocking news that had not yet been leaked. “
- ArenaNet blog — Jordan Massey on the Role of the Squad in WvW. “Squads are our solution to some of the communication difficulty we experienced early on in WvW. Good communication is an inextricable part of excelling on the battlefield, and our existing channels weren’t quite meeting our needs. Team chat was too large because everyone in the entire map could talk in it, resulting in too much noise. On the other hand, parties—which are capped at five members—were too small. In order to bridge that gap, we designed the squad system, which allows communication on a larger scale than parties, but in a much more focused manner than team chat.”
- Guild Wars 2 Facebook page: “Is my copy of Guild Wars 2 tied to my region? Yes. To play from North America you must purchase a North American copy of the game. To play from Europe you must purchase a European copy of the game. Note that this restriction impacts where you can play from, not which game worlds you can choose to play on. By purchasing the correct copy of the game, you’re supporting the game in your country, and you’ll be connecting to your local data center, using your local customer support team, and downloading the correct language support for your country.”
- Guild Wars 2 Facebook page: “Here are some answers and clarifications for you! First, if you purchase the game from https://buy.guildwars2.com/ you’ll automatically be sorted into the right region. And don’t worry — we want you to play with your friends wherever you are. This policy only affects where you can login from — not which worlds you can access. People from NA will be able to play with people from EU at launch. We’ve got two datacenters — one in NA and one in EU. Those who do not fall into either of those two regions will default to the NA datacenter. Finally, we are aware that a lot of our players travel, and we are looking into a solution for you. Hope that helps some!”

- PvP Maps: The Battle of Kyhlo. “There has been a lot of talk around World vs World and how it will change PvP. However, there’s been one missing component of the game that’s been overlooked slightly with the excitement. ArenaNet is setting up daily, monthly and yearly tournaments for competitive PvP in an attempt to turn Guild Wars 2 into a major eSport title. As more information becomes available about the PvP maps, I will attempt to try to break them down and see how well they will work in a competitive situation… as written by someone who has never played the maps before and has no real competitive experience at all. Yes. This will be fun.”
- April 1st Guild Wars 2 Console Versions Revealed! “This just in! We have just received word from a reliable source within ArenaNet that a console version of Guild Wars 2 has been CONFIRMED! That’s right, folks! You heard it here first! There is no confirmed release date as of yet, but it has been confirmed that Guild Wars 2 will be on the Xbox Kinect, the Wii U and the PS3 Move, and we’ve got all the details!”
- Rytlock Statue up Close – EU FanDay. “During our first day at the European Fanday, we found out that Rytlock managed to sneak into Stéphane’s bag (probably) and ended up going with them to Europe. So that’s why we figured that you guys might just be interested in seeing how he looks like up close. Keep in mind though that the painting from the Collector’s Edition one has been slightly altered from this version.”
- EU Fanday Q&A Transcription. “Like we have stated in an earlier blogpost, we would be getting a Q&A sessions with the developers over at ArenaNet. While I had hoped to get more of your questions answered, I think that all the questions together are sufficient enough for now. I have to note though, that I’ll be having a follow up interview to have more of your questions answered in the near future. For now, please enjoy reading this transcription of the whole Video Q&A and be sure to head over to Attached To Keyboard where Tasha Darke has transcribed the other half of the Q&A!”
- EU Fanday Experiences — Journey and Meetings. “Like every journey, the European Fanday started with packing, everything that you take with you, might have an effect on what kinds of things you’ll experience. I brought my camcorder along, because I was planning on having a video interview with Matthew Moore and Stéphane Lo Presti — more on that further on — and I actually also prepared my phone to have access to a 3G connection so that I could keep you guys up to date, seemingly, it only wanted to work the second day, on which we did not experience anything I could send a tweet about in public at that time. After the packing was done, it was time to sleep and rise up early to catch my train to the airport.”
- EU Fanday Experiences – Norn and PvP. “After they fixed the problems, we were allowed to go downstairs again and boot up Guild Wars 2. Contrary to the popularity in races under the invitees, we were being asked to play around with the norn a bit. Since for some reason I did not try to play the norn as extensively as the charr or human starter area during GamesCom, I was quite surprised by the norn tutorial. I picked a norn warrior alligned to the Spirit of the Wolf, my first task was to go out and get a trophy in order to participate in the Great Hunt, it intrigued me that we actually had to kill a fairly decent sized monster as the first quest already, and somehow, it did not feel like your ordinary kill ten rats quest, probably because it was just one monster with more endurance 3 smaller ones surrounding it. Nevertheless, I got my trophy and made my way up to the hills to slay Issormir, the Ice Wurm who had already been spawned.”
- EU Fanday Experiences — Dinner, Beach, Goodbye. “It was then time to move rooms and start the video Q&A. While we came in, Regina, Kristen, Eric, Colin, Josh and Ree were all waiting for us on the big screen. I set up my camcorder in order to record the screen and sound, but since it’s not yet clear if we’re allowed to post this, I will refrain from doing so. [...] I also want to note that since we only were able to pose one question each, Stéphane told me to send a select few of them in to be answered on paper.”

- Yoshi’s Guild Wars 2 Hub — Dungeoneering – Yes, That’s The Proper Term. “So, today I want to sit down and talk a little bit about dungeons. Of course, if you’ve read many of my posts, you know that when I say, “a little bit,” I actually mean, “here’s a wall of text.” Anyways, “dungeoneering” is a word that came out of gaming to mean the process of going through dungeons, navigating one’s way through traps and the like, and getting the rewards. If you Google it, you’ll think that Runescape invented it as a skill/minigame, but before that it has actually been used in D&D. Anyway, enough about the word, let’s talk about the action. Let’s start by talking in general, shall we?”
- April 1st GWOnline.net — Breaking News, Colin Johanson Leaving ArenaNet! “In a press release issued from ArenaNet today, the Bellevue-based developer revealed that one of their core staff, Lead Designer Colin Johanson, will be leaving the company to work with a yet to be announced project with none other than Joss Whedon. This should come as a shock to any Guild Wars 2 fan, and inside sources say that it was no less of a surprise to ArenaNet themselves.”
- April 1st Guild Wars Insider — Combat system overhaul CONFIRMED! “In recent years, the gaming industry has responded with intense curiosity as details about Guild Wars 2′s combat system became more public several years ago, and ArenaNet is expected to announce later this week another drastic change to how Tyrians will fight in the game.”
- April 1st Guild Wars Insider — News On Auction Houses. “The flood of innovation from ArenaNet doesn’t seem to end. When the ArenaNet developers say “rethink the game” they seem to take this dead serious and with their new announcement on Auction Houses they have certainly done just that!”
- April 1st Guild Wars 2 Guru — Exclusive: Ex-Guru Staff Member Head-hunted by ArenaNet & Future of Guru. “In the aftermath of the official forums announcement, the comments from individuals we once thought appreciated the hard work that we’ve done over the years, and after losing an administrator and a few moderators (one which is explained below), I’ve decided that it’s time to let the cat out of the bag: Once the official forums go up, Curse will be taking Guru offline.”
- April 1st GW2 Evolution — Adjustments to PvP. “Just minutes ago ArenaNet announced that they made adjustments to the particle effects of spells and attacks in combat. During recent beta events the one concern we got from most players was that the particle effects are too much in gameplay and would be disturbing in PvP. That is why we will be changing the look of PvP and WvW. The moment a player enters the mist and any future PvP related activities, the entire game will be displayed in gray scale. Internal testing has shown an increase of 3 percent in visibly and distinction of spells which is an enormous improvement and better then any of our designers would have imagined.”
- Girl vs MMO — Now Guild Wars 2 has been on my radar for a while… “I’ve played Guild Wars and went to the panel last year at Pax East but I’ve safely managed to avoid getting hyped. That was until recently. Due to an unfortunate series of events I’ve had to stay home the last few days. With nothing else to do and bored out of my mind I started watching Guild Wars 2 beta videos. Let’s just say I am a little more than hyped and so now I have a problem.”
- Guild Wars 2 Junkies — Crafting, Gathering, and Salvaging. Oh My! “Crafting so far in Guild Wars 2 seems to be a fairly basic system. You create the base component items, then place them in the final craft window and if your items can make something it lets you know. To me It feels like it’s unneeded clicking which is the bane of crafters. Keep in mind that this is still beta and hopefully the system will get some major work before launch. If anything I’d suggest removing the two weapon component clicks into one item. Instead of making a dagger hilt and blade, how about just a stat-less dagger. Then take your dagger and the inscription to make the actual magic Dagger of Noob Slaying.”
- Yoshi’s Guild Wars 2 Hub — Character Blog Project. “I came up with the idea for this project a while ago and put it on Guru, but naturally it got moved somewhere that no one ever reads so no one go to see it. Anyway, here’s the idea. There are a lot of ways for your personal story to pan out. Even if you pick all the same choices in character creation as someone else, you’re going to diverge so many different ways later on. Right now, excluding gender, profession, and looks as they don’t influence the story, there are 405 different ways to start a character based on humans, charr, and norn. When we add in the asua and sylvari, we can probably expect this to jump to around 675. Just with which order you choose, that’s already tripled. What’s the point? Just like ANet has already promised, there are a LOT of different combinations for your personal story out there, making it relatively unique.”
- Maggie’s Marbles — My Constructive Rage? “Even if you aren’t a total PvP pro, you’ll notice quite a few issues with this video. I don’t want to hate on the person who made this video, so I will keep this as general as possible while still giving you some examples from the video.”
- Guild Wars 2 Hub — Beta Preview: Hands-On with the Ranger. “Over the years I’ve played just about every possible combination of primary and secondary professions in Guild Wars for varying lengths of time. However, some professions I took an immediate liking to during the beta weekend events leading up to the release of Prophecies, which were very similar to those that will soon be kicking off for pre-purchase customers for Guild Wars 2.”
- Guild Wars 2 Junkies &mdash Q&A from the EU Fan Day. “Today ArenaNet hosted a fan day for European players in Brighton, UK. They had chances to get in game and play as well as talk with the developers. Luckily for those of us unable to attend the questions and answers were posted on twitter.”
- Guild Wars 2 Live — Tweets From EU Fan Day. “Colin Johanson, Eric Flannum, Ree Soesbee, Kristen Perry and Josh Petire answered several questions over the course of EU Fan Day which Regina broadcasted on Twitter. In case you missed it here’s all the sweet tidbits again. Please note that we have edited some of the lines to make them easier to read. [...] In addition to these questions, look forward to our interview with ArenaNet coming soon!”
- Massively — Flameseeker Chronicles: What’s your golden carrot? “On the Sunday of the most recent beta weekend for Guild Wars 2, I found myself trying to figure out precisely what incentive my friends and I might have to go through the explorable mode of dungeons before we hit level 80. The question arose, in a roundabout way, because there’s not a tremendous amount of XP available (you spend more time killing fewer things), which makes sense if you’re a developer trying to discourage players from entering a dungeon they have no intention of completing in order to farm experience, but it left us wondering whether we’d feel compelled to participate in explorable mode dungeons as we progressed through the game. The point of the matter is, unless you’re well and truly enamored of the armor attainable through a specific dungeon’s tokens, there might not be much empirical motivation to get through a repeatable dungeon. This stood out to me because so much of the game’s reward structure is so clear and well-designed.”
- The Feral Engineer — PvP and Feral Gaming. “With only a 2% lead, the people have spoken and Feral Gaming will now begin production. But, before I do anything to the site, I want to explain what this means exactly. Feral Gaming is a casual PvP and Indy game website. I am at a point in my life where I cannot be a competitive gamer and I am sure many of you are in the same boat. While I absolutely love PvP and always have a blast doing so, the only type of guides out there are for people who want to be competitive or aimed at competitive type builds. Elitist Jerks is a great website, but is highly unapproachable from the standpoint of a casual gamer. When I come home from work, I want to play a few games to relax. I don’t want to come home and get more stressed out about a game and be stressed out about work. And while PvE is definitely fun content (and once Guild Wars 2 comes out I will be doing PvE content and covering it from an Engineer standpoint), ultimately PvP is where I spent most of my time.”
- Kill Ten Rats — The Speed of Gold. “Since ArenaNet has ordained EVE Online to be a spiritual guide to gems in Guild Wars 2, I figured it would be worth taking a look at some of the EVE Online blog bits, which were linked to me by smarter people than I. EVE Online is all about economy. PLEX, which are 1-month subscription coupons, are traded on a market for ISK (gold). Players with a few extra bucks to spend might forego a 3D movie and buy a PLEX to turn it into ISK for their next big spaceship project. Simple economics says that the more demand for PLEX the more ISK someone can make in selling one to the market.”
- Nerdy bookahs and their travel guide — EUFanDay in Brighton (April 2 – April 3, 2012). “We (the people who were invited) arrived in Brighton on Monday and left Tuesday afternoon. I’m still honoured that Nerdy Bookahs had gotten this invitation! It was a short event but fun. I got to meet all those other fan sites, blogs, etc. (of course, not all good fan sites/blogs were invited. I guess it was more a random sample of all the good ones out there because it’d be impossible to have everybody in one small room!).”
- GWOnline.net — The Aesthetics and Creative Side of GW2 – Part 1: Visuals. “In inspecting the artistic parts of Guild Wars 2, I have been remembering about a video clip from some time ago that the overall theme of the game that the designers were aiming for was a painting-like feel, instead of the realistic feel that most other 3D games opt for. With many great artists on board in the Guild Wars 2 development team and witnessing the execution of this plan in person, I have to say that the plan is a great success. As with any other game, Guild Wars 2 has a lot of artistic components to them, so I am going to go through a few of them and inspect one item at a time.”
- Under the Pale Tree — Guild Wars 2 for Preorder – Not Prepurchase! “The date where it is possible to prepurchase your copy of Guild Wars 2 is creeping closer and closer – less than a week left! For quite a while, there’s been retailers in Europe taking preorders on the CE, but not in the US. A recent list has confirmed that in the US, Gamestop will be the only ones doing prepurchase of the GW2 Collector’s Edition.”
- TalkTyria.net — EuFanDay: The interview. “As I said in my last entry here on Talk Tyria, Nerdy Bookahs had been invited to the EUFanDay that took place this Monday and Tuesday in Brighton. I was the one representing our blog there (a first post about this went up on our blog. It includes a growing link collection for write-ups etc. from the EUFanDay). As part of this event, we got to talk with some of the developers about Guild Wars 2. Or rather, each of us (the invited fan sites) were allowed to ask one question. I’d collected a few more than just that, so that was a bit sad. Fortunately, I didn’t have as many questions as some others, so the disappointment from those who sent in their questions wasn’t that big on my site.”
- Guild Wars 2 Journal — Guild Wars 2 Fan Day Report. “As I mentioned last week before I left, I was lucky enough to be invited to NCsoft’s EU Fan Day in Brighton alongside several other members of the European Guild Wars 2 community, and now that I’m back I finally found some time to go through my notes and pictures.”
- GuildWars2Live.com — GW2ing. “WTF is GW2ing? GW2ing is an activity consisting of holding a sword (or pretend sword) in the same fashion as Logan Thackeray while putting on the face of a serious knight. Both hands must touch the hilt of the sword and having a photograph of the participant taken and posted on the Internet is an integral part of the activity.” [Raphia: But "GW2ing" is hard to pronounce. Perhaps "Thackerying" or "Loganing"?]
- Dragon Season — European Fan Day. “EUFanDay Photo Album – Part 1″
- GW2.nl — Exclusive Q&A with Arenanet by GW2NL [ENGLISH VERSION] “Everyone was of course waiting for my return from the EUFanDay with some answers about our members questions about Guild Wars 2. Well, there’s good news since some of our member’s questions have been answered! First of all, the next questions are answered in the video conference with Arenanet.”
- The Tyrian Order — GW2 Quiz. “How much do you really know about Guild Wars 2?”
- Massively — MMO Family: Do kids belong in guilds? “In my regular columns at Massively, I enjoy taking a look at various topics surrounding family-friendly MMOs and common issues in guild management. So it seemed natural to take the two subjects and combine them for this week’s MMO Family. Gamers are growing older, and we’re seeing an increasing presence of younger players, even in the more serious “adult” games like Lord of the Rings Online and EverQuest II. For those who play MMOs with their children, it might seem reasonable to seek a guild tag for them, but that might not sit well with your guild peers. Should kids be allowed in guilds? Are there any benefits to sharing a tag with your children, or are they better off staying unguilded?” [Raphia: Not a specific-to-GW2 column, but probably of interest to many of us.]
- Demajen — Training & the Ups and Downs of Power. “The scaling of abilities is a relatively simple thing in appearance, yet I believe it will make a massive difference to me when I’m playing Guild Wars 2. Just like the flattened EXP curve means that after the first few levels it’ll always take you roughly 90 minutes of solid play to reach your next level, so too will a scaling abilities system mean that you’ll always do roughly proportionate damage. You won’t feel you’re getting less powerful, and you won’t feel the need to grind out another level just to get to the next tier of an ability so you can start feeling awesome again.”
- Attached To Keyboard — EU Fan Day Diary Part 1 – Norn Starter Area. “So let’s get stuck in with the meat and potatoes of the EU Fan Day. I was really surprised to be invited; after all, I haven’t done a huge amount with the wider community lately as I’ve been concentrating on my guild and studies. But having been invited, I wasn’t about to turn the trip down so quickly booked off a couple of days holiday and prepared to go to Brighton again.”
- Nerdy bookahs and their travel guide — My gameplay experience at the EUFanDay. “It turns out, we’re actually allowed to write about our game experience now! Three cheers to ArenaNet for allowing us to share our experiences with you! And there’s no need for them to worry either because except for two tiny things, I enjoyed myself immensely in the game and all in all, I can’t wait to get my hands on the real game. So, in case you’re curious about my gameplay experience, I’m going to try to memorize what I did and thought about the game. ;) The short of it is: I played a norn through their starter area, I played structured PvP, I played through a dungeon and I experienced the downscaling in the open world. The classes I tried were mesmer and warrior.”
- Guild Wars 2 Journal — Guild Wars 2 Norn Gameplay Impressions from EU Fan Day. “It seems that I was not the only EU Fan Day participant who expressed his disappointment about the NDA, and so the NCsoft and ArenaNet community teams listened to our feedback and luckily for us they decided to let us talk about our gameplay experience at the event after all. And why wouldn’t they: my experience with the Guild Wars 2 PvE content, the PvP sessions and dungeon play-through was — just like those of the other players I talked to — overwhelmingly positive. Obviously the game is still in beta and there is certainly still content to add or bugs to iron out, but none of that was apparent during our play sessions. What we have seen so far of Guild Wars 2 is amazingly polished and tons of fun.”
- Guild Wars 2 Live — ArenaNet Interview: Personal Story. “This week we interview ArenaNet to learn more about personal stories in Guild Wars 2. While dynamic events has everyone talking about Guild Wars 2 and is one of the top reasons why we started GuildWars2Live, we are also very much interested in personal storylines. In this interview we geared our questions towards personal story in hopes to have a peek at the depth of the experience without spoiling any content. Joining us for this interview are several game designers working on Guild Wars 2 including Annie VanderMeer Mitsoda, Theo Nguyen, Leif Chappelle and lead game designer, Eric Flannum.”
- Yoshi’s Guild Wars 2 Hub — Flipping Coins and Rolling Dice – Decisions Made Easy. “Anyways, a lot of people out there are having trouble deciding which of the eight professions they want to play as their main in GW2. If I weren’t so completely about maintaining that elementalist is always my original profession, I’d be having this problem, too. So, I figured today I would help make things easier for people and come up with a handy tool for deciding what class to pick. If you’re having trouble with something that isn’t deciding your class, let me know!”
- Guild Wars 2 Universe — Guild Wars 2 Dynamic Events Another Name For Traditional Quests? “Guild Wars community is said to be pretty hardcore (opinions vary ;) ); we read and re-read every single post made by ArenaNet on their blog and on the Guild Wars 2 website to discuss and then dissect it to bits until we have a pretty good grasp of all the mentioned concepts. But a lot of people are new to Guild Wars 2 and have a hard time understanding some of the concepts being (re)introduced in Guild Wars 2. An often asked question for example is: how can there be no quests in an MMORPG? Are dynamic events another name used in place of quests for marketing purposes? Are they similar to dynamic rifts? After resisting the temptation for a while I have finally decided to try to explain a few of the differences between Guild Wars 2 dynamic events system and the traditional MMORPG quests. The explanation should help in clearing up the confusion about how similar/different they are from the public quest system of Warhammer Online or the dynamic rifts of the Rift MMORPG.”
- Attached to Keyboard — EU Fan Day Diary Part 2 – PvP, Dinner and Beaches. “After being forced out of the room for a break by Stephane and having a chat with Paeroka, Dutch and Tilion about what we’d seen so far, we came back into the basement for a bit of PvP. We could either use our norn characters or roll something new – once players have gone through the opening cinematic they could either jump to the mists or straight into a match from the hero panel of the character. I decided to roll a human elementalist to see how hard it was with a single weapon and 4 attributes and jumped straight into a match. My character was immediately bumped up to 80, provided with max weapons and armor with some basic jewellery, and my skill bar fleshed out with skills including Mist Form and Tornado.”
- GWOnline.net — GWO Interview With ArenaNet – Beta Insights and Skills. “GWOnline is very happy to present this interview with ArenaNet about their insights from the beta process so far, and how they go about balancing the game now that we are getting ever closer to release. We were particularly excited to learn that ArenaNet can roll out and test changes to 100 skills in mere minutes, allowing for quicker and more responsive balancing in Guild Wars 2. Oh, and that there are ghost cows, and we will get to fight them! Questions are answered by Mike Ferguson (Game Designer), Annie VanderMeer Mitsoda (Game Designer), Theo Nguyen (Game Designer), Leif Chappelle (Game Designer), Eric Flannum (Lead Game Designer) and Isaiah Cartwright (Lead Systems Designer).”
- Guild Wars 2 Journal — Exclusive Guild Wars 2 Interview: Mike Ferguson talks WvW. “We sent in a short interview not too long ago, right after the big World vs World blog post, and when I came back from EU Fan Day yesterday I found this interview with Guild Wars 2 game designer Mike Ferguson waiting for me in my inbox. I’m glad I can post this today, as Mike was able to share some very nice insight about the WvW game mode in Guild Wars 2, and I’d like to thank him again for taking the time.”
- Hunter’s Insight — Keen Commander. “I haven’t really rambled on about a lot of things that we’ve been seeing from the closed beta weekends. Partly because it was information overload, partially because a lot of it just plain works the way they said it would. I guess now is a good time to talk about World Versus World since Arenanet just posted about being a Commander and joining squads on their blog.”
- Demajen — Client Region ‘Locks’ and the Loss of Basic Literacy. “When did everything go so very wrong for speakers of the English language? How is it that even basic English can be misunderstood by so many? Why is it that people comment and post before they finish reading what they are commenting or posting about? /sigh New information was posted on social networks this evening about datacentre location and regional purchases for GW2.”
- Guild Wars 2 Elementalist — More Anger for Guild Wars 2 Fans at ArenaNet Pre-purchase Fiasco. “Anger rises at ArenaNet and NCSoft’s handling of the Guild Wars 2 pre-purchase scheme as fans expecting to get their hands on the collectors edition are told it’s sold out before the game is even released.”
- Wartower.de — Interview with Ree Soesbee. [Raphia: The introduction is in German, but the interview itself is in English, and there's an English transcription available.].

Keep in mind that I had done none of the personal story for any of these, so a lot of what you see would most likely change after some progress through your narrative.”

Rest assured, just because they’re implementing their own community site, ArenaNet doesn’t have designs on replacing your fan sites and forums, as Kerstein told German fan site the Wartower. Kerstein stressed that ArenaNet’s goal is for its forums and other community site features to serve more as a central hub for disseminating information and highlighting fan site projects, rather than as a replacement for fan-made sites”
- April 1st YouTube — Tales of Tyria #25: LegacyCast. “Some very surprising news this week for the show, and then we cover some questions from the mailbag. We talk a bit about the holy trinity and Dependancy vs. Teamwork, then we move on to a discussion of how end game gear will work. Finally, we end by discussing everyone’s favorite topic, World of Warcraft!”

- Guild Wars Insider — From the Mists, Details Emerge. “Here we see the commonly used but rarely explored Mists of Guild Wars 2, the gateway to structured PvP. Our warrior was dropped into what is basically the PvP setup area, leveled up to Lvl. 80, given all skills and trait points and then left to his own devices. Watch as he disarms himself, ponders skill setup and learns that dodging while using a skill stops it and puts it into a 5s recharge. Then he attempts to explore the complexities of the warrior as he decides to build a rifle and signet trait setup, without even having an actual rifle in his possession. Listen as a Sylvari armourer greets every other player who talks to her while you’re just minding your own business!”
- YouTube — TapRepeatedly: Guild Wars 2 Ranger PvP (720p). “Lewis B shows off his Ranger skills during the last 3 day press event (23-25 March). Follow me @PersistentWorld for updates on the Thief PvP videos due this week! Please note: Keys still couldn’t be rebound to CTRL + or Shift + and pets are well and truly broken!”
- Guild Wars Insider — Guild Wars 2 on a Mac? “During the most recent Guild Wars 2 beta test, one question we wanted to research was this: How will Guild Wars 2 run on a Mac? I installed it on my two-year old iMac to find out. While we know that there are no plans for a Mac version of the game, it does install smoothly using Bootcamp or a virtual machine software, such as Parallels.”
- PCGamer.com — Watch 45 minutes of Guild Wars 2 dungeon footage, plus commentary! “After this, no-one will dare suggest that I don’t love setting things on fire. They may freely suggest, however, that I am not actually a seven foot tall cat person. Or very good at Guild Wars 2. While I was at ArenaNet last week I recorded a full run of Guild Wars 2′s Ascalonian Catacombs dungeon in story mode, and Tim and I would like to talk you through it. It’s 45 minutes long, but we’ve helpfully provided links to skip to specific boss fights – both within the video and below.”
- Guild Wars Insider — Guild Wars 2 PvP: Guardian vs. Elementalist. “In this Guild Wars 2 Beta video, we witness a structured PvP battle between a Guardian and an Elementalist. While it’s obvious that both players are still getting used to their professions, we do receive a glimpse at the epic fights that fans will enjoy in the near future.”

Enjoy and don’t take it too seriously! :D”

Good times were had by all! “
- YouTube — SageLikeOne: Guild Wars 2 Q&A (#18) (names, pets, cookie-cutters, pet-controls). “Today: reserving names, unique pets, servernumbers, frostfire wolves, limited deluxe editions, character slots, cookie-cutter builds and pet-controls”
- YouTube — WoodenPotatoes: Guild Wars 2 Daily: The Descendant of Arah Night Wastes. “Your daily dose of Guild Wars 2 lore and Mechanics! Many thanks to Gw Insider for the footage in the background today – its a little bit sped up to fit it all in, but a great tour of DR/BC”
- YouTube — khele23: Guild Wars 2 – Ranger pet taking one for the team. “A ranger pet ‘catches’ a bullet intended for his master and gets blown away! This gave me a chuckle when I saw it in one of GW2 pvp videos from TapRepeatedly and I decided the heroic sacrifice deserved a separate slow motion video and some catty sound effects ;)”
- Boons & Conditions — Podcast #3: Outside Beta Observations. “This episode Faelor, Arithion, Luperza, and newcomer Esloan talk about the footage released from the most recent press beta. As footage is still slowly being released the crew could only grapple a few topics for this episode including; the evolution of dynamic events, criticisms regarding the combat system, and if the difficulty of dungeons will fracture the community. In addition to all the Guild Wars 2 related news clarification of the B&C project is discussed, along with some hints as to what is coming up in the future.”
- Gamebreaker.tv — ArenaNet Hosts Guild Wars 2 Q&A On Twitter. “ArenaNet fielded a bunch of Guild Wars 2 questions via Twitter yesterday as part of EU Fan Day. But you don’t have to be European to soak up the answers, which Guild Wars Insider has helpfully compiled here. Good thing too — my passport’s out of date.”
- Gamebreaker.tv — Guild Wars 2 Blog Post Describes Squad And Commanders. “Squads are a sort of middle organizational ground between traditional five-person groups and “everyone-in-the-chat-channel” chaos, allowing players to group up to better communicate their goals and objectives in WvW or PvE. Joining a squad is easy, requiring just a click on any squad member. You can also form your own squad by becoming a commander, which requires a one-time purchase using gold. Only squad commanders can talk to their squad in a special chat channel, and they can also ping the map with objectives and commands. Whether they’ll follow those commands… well, that depends on your leadership abilities.”

Surprisingly, no new fanfic items came to my attention again this week.

[...] weekly column at GuildMag has been posted. The big news this week was the fan event that ArenaNet hosted in their Brighton [...]
Well at least now it’s been confirmed that the first BWE will be next
weekend April 27-29. Glad to finally know, but sad it interferes with
GW1′s anniversary events too. But I’m sure ArenaNet just wasn’t ready
for this weekend and figured that HAD to have the BWE by the end of the
month or else people would flip out, so better to overlap the GW1 event
then to postpone it longer.
