This week in Guild Wars 2

Written by  //  October 26, 2012  //  Community  //  Comments Off

The GW2 Halloween event is well underway, and we have lots of links to Halloween hints, tips, guides, and the like. Just before the Halloween content became available, I finally got around to continuing my personal story. My second attempt to defend the Queen from undead Risen invading her throne room worked much better (perhaps the first attempt was a glitch, or just Raphia being clueless — don’t answer that!). Beyond that chapter, I had to choose one of the orders to join and it was quite odd going from being the appointed royal diplomat in charge of negotiating with the three orders to being a n00b novice in one of the orders.

I took different crafting options with each of my various characters, on the theory that each one could craft items for the rest of my characters in their specialty. In practice, it didn’t really work out all that well: when the gear would be most helpful, it’s too high level for the character I want to make it for, and since I can’t mail items to my other characters, they have to take up precious bank space until each of the other characters needs the items and gets to a bank. I’ve generally found that the armour pieces and weapons I get as dropped loot provide me with enough protection and boosts that it just isn’t worth the logistical hassle of running a weapons-and-armour supply depot.

Official Guild Wars 2 news

  • Guild Wars 2 wiki — Game status updates. “This is the current status of the most important issues we’re tracking with Guild Wars 2 live service. (This page is updated by ArenaNet staff and protected against non-admin editing.)” [Raphia: This page on the wiki should be one you bookmark for reference (I'll continue to list it every week).]
  • GuildWars2.com — Concept Artist Spotlight: Taylor Krahenbuhl. “One of the newest additions to the ArenaNet concept art team, Taylor Krahenbuhl is a multi-faceted, multi-talented artist who understands the synergy between art and storytelling.”
  • Twitch.tv — TAD Talk: Halloween. (If you don’t want to watch all 17 minutes, Guild Wars 2 Live has a summary here.)
  • GuildWars2.com — Update Notes – October 22, 2012. “Happy Halloween! Let the trick-or-treating begin. The “Mad Kings” have dusted off their costumes and are taking to the stage, telling their jokes to make the children laugh. It’s a lighthearted holiday, and only children truly believe that the spirit of Mad King Thorn once appeared in Tyria. No one has actually reported seeing him in over two centuries. These days, he’s nothing more than a tale told to make children squeal and behave.”
  • GuildWars2.com — Structured PvP October Update. “As we said in our last blog post, we’ve just seen the tip of the iceberg for sPvP. Custom Arenas are still being worked on and when they’re ready, we’ll show you more. In the meantime, there are a number of new features coming to PvP.”
  • GuildWars2.com — Costume Brawl for All! “Costume Brawl is a fun thing to do when you need a break from all that hero-ing you’ve been doing. Think of all those fun moments playing tag, or running around a playground during recess. Costume Brawl ties into that simple fun of being in the moment playing — but once the centaurs show up, everyone gets back to this hero business of saving Tyria. Using toy items, transform tonics, and interacting with other things in the world allow you to participate in a free-for-all brawl with other players out in the world. If you are a hardcore 24/7 e-sport PvP player you’ll probably be good at this, but it’s not going to scratch your itch specifically. It’s not serious, it’s not highly competitive, but it does let other players interact in ways they normally can’t.”
  • On the official Guild Wars 2 forums, Jon Peters posted on the topic Ranger update: “We made some ranger changes this patch, but had to go back on them because of risk factor. There are some bugs being fixed and quality of life improvements coming in the next patch, as well as some other significant ranger improvements. I would Literally tell you but I think it would be considered a bit of a spoiler so you will have to be patient. While we work hard to keep updates going on all professions, not very build us going to contain fixes for everyone due to the nature of software development. One problem with rangers is the lack of build diversity created by a number of sub par utility skills. Many signets, a shout or two, and spirits are all a bit lackluster. That is the first place to expect improvements. Second is trying to improve the feel/ pacing on some weapons.” [Raphia: This is excellent news for rangers: we haven't been forgotten by the ArenaNet developers. But we need to trait for patience a little longer...]
  • SoundCloud Guild Wars 2 Halloween 2012. “Keeping with the tradition established in the first Guild Wars, the Mad King is back this year to taunt and terrorize the citizens of Tyria with all sorts of fun Halloween content.”
  • GuildWars2.com — Update Notes – October 24, 2012.

Fan articles and blog posts

  • Hunter’s Insight — Sic Semper Botannis. “I don’t pretend to speak for other servers but the bot problem on Northern Shiverpeaks is getting kind of insane. You can’t go anywhere without running into these guys. They are consistently and constantly in Cursed Shore farming the undead north of Penitent Camp, at Penitent itself, farming the tar elementals by the R&D camp, Shelter camp, farming undead near the Grenth event, farming undead between Jofast camp and Meddlers, farming undead near Anchorage. That’s just one zone and probably at least 25 bots.”
  • Kill Ten Rats — Quests and Events: The Return. “Coming back to a quest-based MMO, in this case Lord of the Rings Online (“LOTRO”), after spending so much time in Guild Wars 2 was eye opening. I never once believed that the renown/event system of Guild Wars 2 (“the Guild Wars 2 system”) would kill quest-based design in any sense of the word. Guild Wars 2 had something very similar in their personal story. I did however think that perhaps the renown/event system was better, at least for me. I realize now after spending a couple hours in LOTRO, that “better” is not the right word. “Different” is more accurate.”
  • Guild Wars 2 Hub — Profession Health Check – October 2012. “With Halloween right around the corner, now might be a good time to take a pit stop and assess where we are in terms of Guild Wars 2’s professions. I must stress, this entire post is based purely on my own anecdotal evidence, however, I am keen to hear about your views on each profession (or your specific profession of choice) and where you feel improvements need to be made or whether a big old beating with the nerf bat would be more appropriate.”
  • Guild Wars 2 Trading Post — When to Cancel Buy and Sell Orders. “My general rule of thumb is to wait at least 24 hours to cancel buy orders (no penalty) and one week for Sales Listings (5% loss each time). If you EVER accidentally list an item for gold instead of silver, sometimes it isn’t worth it to even bother cancelling it. This is because the 5% penalty is based on whatever you listed the item for.”
  • Demajen — Of Elements and Storms – Part One. “My MMO experience over the last couple of weeks has led me to raise an interesting question about how I play MMORPGs: namely, can I still have fun even though I find elements of the experience lacking? The answer to that seems to be yes, but I’m not entirely sure why… In order to try and figure this out, I’m going to compare two MMO experiences: playing the elementalist profession in Guild Wars 2 (part one), and playing the defiler cleric soul in RIFT: Storm Legion (part two).”
  • Guild Wars 2 Hub — The Anatomy of a Tower. “Towers are structures that act as fixed points to defend trebuchets in Guild Wars 2. While they are generally rather simple, a few walls and a gate, attacking and defending these structures can actually be quite complicated. We’ve dug in deep and look at all of the different tactics involving capturing and defending towers, including siege range and the best methods to secure these structures for your world in our latest in-depth World vs. World guide.”
  • Guild Wars 2 Trading Post — I Just Need 20 More Gold. “I addressed the person’s concerns in the rest of the email correspondence, but what I want to bring to your attention today is the fact that this mentality makes the game unenjoyable. I just need X gold for item Y is a stressful way to play. Why is it so stressful? Because once you do finally have X gold for item Y, you spend it and are back down to 0. That’s not a lot of fun at all.”
  • Guild Wars 2 Riches — The Power Of Alts When Farming. “Enough talk of investments for now. A truly successful economic plan needs diversity. Once you have your funds invested in a series of niches and you have an idea of when the price will peak what do you do until then? What’s a good way to get money steadily and regularly? “
  • Kitten Crafting Station — Price Fluctuation in the Spirit of Halloween. “Content patches like the Halloween event can have a great impact on the in-game economy in the form of price fluctuation, which basically means the average price of an item changing significantly. The demand for an item can rise greatly, if the item is suddenly needed or wanted more than usual. This pushes the price higher.”
  • Kill Ten Rats — Combos. “Combos are poorly documented in-game (if at all) but they are awesome and useful. (This seems common for ArenaNet.) They are like LotRO’s fellowship maneuvers but simpler, less powerful, more mobile, and more varied. (This post adds “thought” to the previous “hey, these exist.”)”
  • Guild Wars 2 Trading Post — Crafting Mid Level Weapons for Big Profits. “This tip was emailed to me regarding making money through crafting. Like all tips on this blog, do not actually go out and use the specific example as given. Otherwise you’ll shoot yourself in the foot. Instead, go find another similar market that this works for and go to town with very little competition!”
  • Guild Wars 2 Riches — Halloween Event Brainstorm Post. “I work from home. I’m a lucky guy in that respect, though I must admit it’s a trial making sure I work instead of game. This week though, this kind of freedom is a real bonus. I don’t need to chalk up long hours, I just need to be able to keep an eye on TP prices.”
  • Guild Wars 2 Machinima — Shield of Absorption – A Bastion in the Dark. “You’re standing on the edge of your keep wall, peering over the crenelations into the morass of writhing bodies, baying for blood below. Your commander shouts directions to the troops: “Man the cannons! Push them back!” Your allies rush along the length of the walls, dropping fire and arrows on the invaders below, but they just keep coming. Agitated, your grip tightens around the edge of your shield.”
  • Guild Wars 2 Hub — Being Legendary: An Intro to Legendary Weapons. “In many ways, legendary weapons in Guild Wars 2 represent the penultimate achievement that players can strive to attain. The journey won’t be an easy one, however, and I absolutely expect that only a small percentage of players will ever equip one. Much like similar systems in other games, such as EverQuest’s original epic weapons, legendary weapons represent a major time commitment that may prove to be a bit too daunting for many.”
  • Guild Wars InsiderGW2 HALLOWEEN: The Great Scavenger Hunt. “Start the Scavenger Hunt by speaking with Magister Tassi in Lions Arch near the fountain in the Grand Plaza area. After the conversation is completed, check your mailbox for her message containing a Candy Powered Matter Meter and Personalize Trick or Treat bag. If you haven’t figured it out by now… the meter runs on candy, so be sure to stock up on some candy corn before and during your journey through Tyria.”
  • MMORPG.comGuild Wars 2 Previews: Basking in the Shadow of the Mad King. “Given that Halloween has come to be one of the largest festivals in the original Guild Wars, it won’t surprise veterans of the series that the seasonal event is going to make up a big part of Guild Wars 2‘s October content update. With Shadow of the Mad King, ArenaNet is poised to update the game with a huge two-fold build that will bring the eponymous Halloween event into Tyria alongside other content and rewards for players interested in exploring the game world. We were recently invited to take a look at some of the new stuff coming down the pipe for Guild Wars 2, and I got to chat with Lead Content Designer Mike Zadorojny and Game Designer Matt Wuerffel about the game’s October update.”
  • IGN.com — What’s Next for Guild Wars 2? “To keep people logging in, ArenaNet plans on adding new content every month to its recently launched, subscription-less MMO. This month it’s a Halloween-themed update called Shadow of the Mad King which will begin rolling out on October 22 with Act 1 content. From that point forward ArenaNet will continue to unlock more and more across Acts 2 through 4 until, on November 1, all the Halloween-related content, including fancy decorations around the hub city of Lion’s Arch and harvestable nodes of candy corn, is phased out.”
  • GW2Guru — Official Update Notes & Database Updates Including New Skins!
  • Massively — Flameseeker Chronicles: Preparing for the Mad King in Guild Wars 2. “By now, Lion’s Arch probably looks a little different than we’re used to. It had already taken on a decidedly ghoulish cast in Guild Wars by Friday, so I guess the Mad King’s influence shifted by a few calendar days over the course of the 250 years between Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2.”
  • MMORPG-life.com — Halloween Pumpkin Locations. “GW2 Halloween event carving pumpkins will give you achievement and title. You can carve them everywhere not just in Lion’s Arch. If you want to finish everything in the Lion’s Arch just relog to another overflow server. In Queensdale there’s a guy that will grant you the title “Master Carver” if you carve enough pumpkins. There are 4 tiers of pumpkin carving before you get the title (150 Pumpkins). The title is account bound, so you can carve in the same area with different characters.”
  • Gamespy — Guilded: Guild Wars 2 – The On Again, Off Again MMO. “One of Guild Wars 2‘s greatest advantages over any other MMO is that it’s easier to quit playing. Which isn’t how it’s supposed to work. Unlike normal games, MMOs are based on keeping you involved at all costs. There must always be something just beyond your grasp, some reward at your fingertips, some reason to keep playing a little longer. Many games work like this, of course, but MMOs in particular have a financial incentive to work like this. MMOs are based entirely on the premise that you should never, ever stop playing. It’s like episodic TV, except that there’s no next week. There is only and always now. Guild Wars 2 bucks this trend. It’s easier to quit playing because, ironically, it’s easier to start playing again.”
  • Dulfy.net — Shadow of the Mad King Scavenger Hunt guide. “Shadow of the Mad King Scavenger Hunt guide for Guild Wars 2 Halloween event complete with pictures and detailed instructions!”
  • Guild Wars InsiderGW2 Halloween Crafting Guide. “Thanks to all those sending in their findings! Feel free to post any recipes you discover to news(at)guildwarsinsider.com or post it in the comments below. This list will be updated as more contributions come in and DBs get around to updating.”
  • Guild Wars 2 Riches — Halloween Food – Revealed. “I also want to touch on the candy corn there. It’s required for EVERYTHING. It’s at about 59 copper now. I don’t know how abundant it is yet but I DO know that these recipes – all Halloween recipes – are available permanently but the ingredients (corn) might not be. Candy Corn could be a great bet to stockpile – physically or by investment – for later months.”
  • Guild Wars 2 Hub — Black Lion Underground – 23 October 2012. “After a good few weeks I’ve finally broken the 100g barrier. This was helped a huge amount, as I predicted, by Gem prices sky rocketing to 85 silver per 100. As I had 8000, that’s a fair old chunk of money. As it currently stands, I’ve around 130g in total, based on the fact I’ve 45 gold’s worth of items just waiting to be sold on the trading post.”
  • Kill Ten Rats — Elementalist Review. “The elementalist is one of the two best group support classes and the worst solo class. To get the most out of it, you need to be with other people. To get the most out of it, you need to constantly switch attunements and use all 20 skills. You will love this class if you run dungeons, if you attack towers with a zerg in WvW, or if you like to hit large groups of enemies with giant, flaming rocks. You will love this class if you draw satisfaction from seeing others succeed. You will hate this class if you play a lot of underwater content, if you compare your damage to others, or if you need to see the big numbers on your screens rather than the combo effects telling you they are on others’ screens.”
  • Guild Wars 2 Riches — Holiday Black Lion Chests. “A number of you guys have reported great success with gem flippage and I think it’ll be a solid technique going into each event. When gems have reached a low point a month or a few weeks before Halloween, Chrismas (and any other event Arenanet cares to bring to us), invest in them and wait until the first few days of the event in question.”
  • Guild Wars 2 Machinima — Real Life Lore: Tyrian Settlement Through 12th Century Eyes. “As a medievalist I read a lot of books which form the basis of fantasy worlds like Tyria: Arthurian romances, tales of chivalry and myths of exquisite beasts which have been told and retold for centuries and have become embedded in our culture. In the present day, people draw upon these legends for inspiration, be it for books, films or videogames, and the world of Guild Wars is no exception.”
  • Guild Wars Insider — Guide to The Forsaken Halls, (Dark Room) Mini Dungeon. “The Forsaken Halls (or Dark Room as some call it) is an event-based, non-instanced, mini dungeon that is meant to scale to the number of players involved.”
  • Massively — Choose My Adventure: Guild Wars 2 takes the polls. “I think of myself as a strange bird when it comes to playing MMOs. I’m predominantly an explorer. I used to call myself a crafter, but crafting doesn’t really live up to my snooty standards. I’m not big into PvP, but I like having it in my games, though I prefer the much-maligned open-world PvP that’s found in EVE Online and Darkfall. I even like to go into dungeons. I’m happy when my character dings or gets a new shiny, but it’s all icing on a delicious cake for me. I’m also very flighty at times and can’t stand to do one activity for too long. Yet I’ve also found myself gathering for hours on end, with no break.”
  • Under the Pale Tree — The spookiest time of year is here! “Leaves are falling, the days are getting shorter…it’s fall, and fall means Halloween!”
  • Reddit — All Halloween Chef recipes (with guide). “I love having all chef recipes. It’s something you can’t do with the other disciplines (they suck to complete 100%). So well, here we go: (13 in total, 7 discover and 6 recipe)” [Raphia: Hat tip to Guild Wars 2 Stratics for the link.]
  • Reddit — Earn 5 Personalized Trick or Treat bags for the price of 1 Candy Corn. “So, many of you will have finished Act I by now and will probably be waiting for the next one to use your Candy Corn Powered detector again. Well, did you know that it discovers other little hidden spots too?” [Raphia: Hat tip to Guild Wars 2 Stratics for the link.]
  • Hunter’s Insight — November Content. “Following the Halloween content, it was mentioned on the official Guild Wars 2 forums that there would be a content update coming up in November unrelated to the festival. Details of the content seem to be already leaking.”
  • Hunter’s Insight — Halloween So Far. “I’ve been having a lot of fun with Halloween. Guild Wars had a pretty solid history with its Halloween festival, slowly growing the number of activities until after a few years it felt like an extensive and hard to beat festival. Guild Wars 2 has started out on the right foot.”
  • Guild Wars 2 Hub — The Underbelly: Hacks, Cheats, Bots and Exploits. “It took me exactly 3 minutes to find and locate a working bot for Guild Wars 2. The bot in question allows you to increase your magic find to 500% at the flick of a switch, increase your movement speed on a sliding scale, your field of view (again on a sliding scale) as well as teleport to any location on the current map, this also includes appearing instantly next to undiscovered vista’s, waypoints or points of interest.”
  • Guild Wars 2 Trading Post &mdash Upgrade Humps. “In Guild Wars 2, there are several points in the game where players can upgrade their gear from fine to masterwork to rare to exotic. These points occur at different levels, and I’ll leave the (easy) job of discovering where those points lie up to you.”
  • Guild Wars 2 Hub — The Art of War – Siege Etiquette. “This week’s Art of War answers a question about siege weapon etiquette and we take a look at how to overcome unwinnable scenarios. World vs. World has a lot of awesome features that players don’t quite grasp the concept of and zergs will do what zergs do best, but that doesn’t mean you have to be apart of one. We look at some alternatives whenever the fight becomes unwinnable.”
  • Guild Wars 2 Riches — Mad King Chests. “The chests themselves are another lottery ticket – another roll of the dice like the original black lion chests. This is different from how I suspected they’d resolve this. It’s good and bad. I’ll explain why. It’s bad because, if you’re a fantastically unlucky person like me, approximately 100 chests of various sorts gave you no weapon or shoulder skin :)”
  • Dulfy.netGW2 Endgame gearing guide. “So you finally made it to level 80! High five! Now the fun part starts. Depending on how well you took care of your character, he/she could be in L50 blues and go down every pull. Luckily, this guide should help you on the right direction!”
  • GW2 WvW — Server Transfers, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. “Welcome to Guild Wars 2 WvW launch + 60 days. Quite a bit has happened in the game since it went live 2 months ago, however, there’s quite a bit of stuff that needs to be cleaned up, especially when it comes to the world of World vs World. Today I’d like to talk about server transfers, and how the current system is having an effect on the World v World metagame.”
  • Guild Wars 2 Hub — The Splendid Chest – Ghostly Encounters. “With the Shadow of the Mad King event now in full swing, players are scampering across Tyria to carve pumpkins, locate Haunted Doors for some trick-or-treating fun, and participate in a variety of other activities themed for Halloween. However, there are plenty of other ghostly encounters to be found on various maps in the game. In the spirit of the holiday, we’ve rounded up a few of our favorite ghostly encounters for you to check out in this special edition of our explorer’s journal, the Splendid Chest.”
  • Kill Ten Rats — Prepping for Halloween. “This week has been all about playing through the first Act of the ongoing Guild Wars 2 event. So far it’s been really nice, but at the same time I am wondering if there is something meatier coming. Act 1 is definitely the opening scene, but I feel it’s a tad weird for the opening scene to last for half of the whole play. Act 2 starts tomorrow, with things ramping up fast after that.”
  • Guild Wars 2 Trading Post — Selling Boots for Higher Profit Margins. “Boots tend to have a much lower vendor cost than other pieces of armor. Since most armor pieces of the same type sell for a similar amount, but boots can often be bought for cheaper than the rest of your outfit, this leads to bigger profit margins on boots over other items.”
  • Guild Wars 2 Riches — Halloween Candy Corn Investment. “There are a few things I want to look at here. First, will candy corn be desirable after the holidays? Second, will supply decrease? Finally, are there other things worth investing in? Or how much is too much? Let’s answer the easiest first – supply will definitely decrease. There will be no more candy corn entering the market. That we know of – and this is an important thing to bear in mind.”
  • Gamer n00bGW2 Controls = WTFBBQ? “Alright. I’ve been playing more Guild Wars 2, and trying to figure out the best way to set up my controls. I’ve decided that I’m DEFINITELY doing something wrong. Like, n00by-chicken-with-their-head-cut-off wrong.”
  • Guild Wars 2 StraticsReddit poster Tharpless helpful pumpkin carving route for Queensdale. “Missing any of the GW2 carving pumpkins in Queensdale? Looks like Reddit poster Tharpless has come to save the day for any looking for the carving pumpkins. Great little map to use for any you have missed.”
  • Guild Wars 2 Stratics — Lion’s Arch Pumpkin Caving Map By Elements of Fate [Fate]. “Here is a map for Lions Arch for the GW2 pumpkin carving event. Elements of Fate on Sorrows Furnace posted it on MMORPG-life.com.”
  • TalkTyria.net — Awesomely Helpful UI Tips and Tricks. “By now many players have gotten used to the way Guild Wars 2 handles combat, dynamic events, and other big ticket features. But through talking to some guildmates and other random players, I’ve been seeing an interesting pattern that really isn’t all that surprising; people don’t know everything about some of the game’s most useful menu and UI options. Being the ever helpful player I am, I want to do my best to inform people of these little gems whenever possible.”

Fanfic

  • Foundation — Ache | Chapter XII: The Cataclysm. “Ascalon City. One way or another, this would be the last time I ever laid eyes on it. It had haunted me like a specter in and of itself; the ghosts were merely a physical expression of a soulless, aching construct. We would all die here, or I would never again return.”
  • Foundation — Ache | Chapter XIII: The Current. “Soul warband carried me ahead on a wave of destruction, scattering the enemies before me and lowering their defenses. Without their usual formations, the enemy had no allies to shield them or slow my advance. Every adversary fought me unaided, his steel alone against mine.”
  • Chronicles of Tyria — Talking Up Your Story. “OK, this week I have settled on dialogue over action because, I believe, dialogue is my strongest of the three elements and I have more to say on it. • Foundation — Ache | Chapter XIV: The Reformation. “I carried Katryn up the stairs into the fractured cathedral. We were scattered, like leaves blown in the wind. It was over.
